Florida Septic Tank Law Changed

The Florida Legislature passed legislation today which takes the first step in repealing a septic tank inspection mandate set to begin on January 1,2011. The bill, sponsored by Senator Don Gaetz (R-Niceville) and Representative Marti Coley (R-Marianna), stops the implementation of the mandate which Gaetz describes as “too costly and too intrusive.”

“We are one step closer to repealing this law that would cause a tremendous financial burden to Floridians already suffering from the worst economy in generations,” said Gaetz. The senator also objected to the way the mandate was included in a larger water quality bill during the 2010 session without sufficient explanation of its consequences.
Gaetz’s bill stops state agencies from requiring millions of Floridians who have septic tanks to be subjected to inspections which would cost hundreds of dollars each.
Instead, the Legislature enacted a six month delay in the effective date of the inspections. That will allow lawmakers to hold public hearings and consider an outright repeal of the mandate.

Florida Septic Tank Law--Good Idea or Bad Idea?

Environmental concerns led the Florida Legislature last spring to require mandatory septic system inspections.
But a public backlash, driven by the potential costs it carries, has legislators promising to reverse the new law as soon as possible.
The sometimes fiery public protest has focused mainly on the potential costs to homeowners - inspections could cost $500, and if major problems are uncovered, residents could face thousands in repair bills

Gulf Power Lowers Utility Bills

Northwest Florida residents should start to see slightly lower electric bills beginning next year.

For the first time in more than 10 years, Gulf Power is lowering its rates for electricity. Typical residential customers should see a 2.8 percent decrease in their electricity bills in January compared to January 2010, said Jeff Rogers, a spokesman for Gulf Power.

“Really, through some careful planning in management this year we’re able to tweak our fuel mix and the result was being able to pass along some savings to our customers,” Rogers said.

Gulf Power’s base rate has not changed since 2002, but the rising cost of fuel the utility uses to produce electricity has driven up utility bills.
